Stitchery Links Past and Present

Remember your grandmother’s embroidered dresser scarves and fancy pillowcases? The delicate look of hand-stitched embellishment on everything from tea towels to wallhangings, pillows and clothing has spurred the interest of a new generation of stitchers.

In the past, young girls honed their skills with a needle on smaller, decorative items as a first step toward the life-long job of sewing clothing and household items. "Redwork" is the well-recognized use of red thread on white for these traditional pieces. Today, stitchery projects can be seen popping out of tote bags, briefcases and diaper bags whenever, and wherever, women find a few minutes to sit and relax. Stitchery is portable, requires few tools and threads and usually requires mastery of just a couple of stitches, primarily the simple backstitch.

We have many patterns for stitchery projects that can be either heat transferred or traced on to the background fabric. Many reproduction designs from the 19th and 20th centuries can be easily combined with crazy quilt blocks or stand alone on pillow tops and other decorative accessories. Other decorating styles, include country, primitive, north woods and just-plain-fun funky are also well represented by a wide range of designers. Many Block-of-the-Month stitchery patterns use seasonal images with a central character, such as snowmen or cats. Stitchery pins, tree ornaments, and cards are very popular!

If you are new to needlework and quilting, and want a simple place to begin, stitchery may be for you! We can help you find the right fabrics, such as muslin, osnaburg or Lin-N-Spun, as well as patterns, embroidery floss and chenille needles. Once you’ve completed your stitchery, we can help you explore your options for finishing, including making pillows, wallhangings, quilts or other useful items.
