Stitchery Links Past and Present
In the past, young
girls honed their skills with a needle on smaller, decorative items
as a first step toward the life-long job of sewing clothing and household
items. "Redwork" is the well-recognized use of red thread
on white for these traditional pieces. Today, stitchery projects can
be seen popping out of tote bags, briefcases and diaper bags whenever,
and wherever, women find a few minutes to sit and relax. Stitchery is
portable, requires few tools and threads and usually requires mastery
of just a couple of stitches, primarily the simple backstitch.
If you are new to needlework and quilting, and want a simple place to begin, stitchery may be for you! We can help you find the right fabrics, such as muslin, osnaburg or Lin-N-Spun, as well as patterns, embroidery floss and chenille needles. Once you’ve completed your stitchery, we can help you explore your options for finishing, including making pillows, wallhangings, quilts or other useful items.
